GeoZone GeoServices is headed up by Gerald Davie, who has had in excess of 25 years in the geotechnical industry. He is one of a handful of UK qualified M.Sc professionals in the country, having obtained his Masters degree from the University of Leeds back in 1994.
Geotechnics has taken him to some interesting jobs in some out-of-the-way places, including both the large dams in Lesotho, tunnels in the Italian dolomites, a dam site in the Sultanate of Oman, the coal fields of Mozambique, the upgrade of Chapman’s Peak Drive, the Gautrain project and the massive bridges across the deeply- incised valleys of the Transkei for the proposed N2 realignment.
These are of course the glamorous jobs, but there have been a host of other perhaps less exciting, but certainly interesting projects, with some providing their fair share of challenges. These include slope stability analysis of some 30 m high cuts on KZN’s rural roads, foundation assesments for multi-storey buildings, as well as numerous site investigations for townships, housing developments, high rise buildings, industrial sites and slimes dams. On the mining side the company has carried out stability assessments for open cast mines, installed instrumentation, undertaken rock mass assessments and mining Codes of Practice.
